13-year-old Joey King is quickly becoming a very recognizable face in movies and TV. After starring as the titular troublemaker in last year’s Ramona & Beezus (a particular favourite of mine), Joey’s been working non-stop with a turn in last summer’s star-laden success Crazy, Stupid, Love, a midseason NBC show with Amanda Peet and upcoming sure-hit blockbuster film projects like The Dark Knight Rises and Oz: The Great and Powerful.
The enthusiastic actress took the time to speak with me about her breakout year. Here’s what she had to say:
Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise is one of the biggest in the world, was it intimidating jumping on board for The Dark Knight Rises? It was so cool, I had an amazing time. I got to travel to places I’d never been to before. Christopher Nolan is so nice, so is Christian Bale. I just had the best time.
What’s your role in that film? I play young Talia al Ghul. I can’t give too much away because I promised Mr. Nolan I wouldn’t say anything. There are too many secrets about the character and the movie.
You’ve done quite a few films with that big a scope, lots of stunts and extras, things blowing up, is it easy to get somewhat lost in the shuffle? You know, it’s really really cool doing all those things. In most of my movies I’ve done all my own stunts. You really feel like you’re flying when you’re on a harness. It is easy to get caught up in the scene- when you’re filming a scene with explosions and you’re running away from things and you’re flying on a harness, you think it’s really happening. It’s so much fun… until they yell “CUT”. It’s amazing. I love doing all my own stunts, and I love doing all the flying.
Right now you’re working on the new Oz prequel, who do you play in that? I play China Girl and Wheelchair Girl. China Girl’s a girl from the book, and Wheelchair girl’s in Kansas- she asks Oz to fix her legs, but he can’t do it. It’s sort of like how in the original Wizard of Oz, Tin Man is one of her friends from Kansas, that’s kind of how this movie is. And I have a really great cast. I’m working with James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff and Rachel Weisz. Sam Raimi’s the director and it’s so much fun. I’m having a lot a lot a lot of fun. China Girl’s really like a sassy character. She’s lost her family so Oz becomes sort of like her adoptive father.
As you can see, the bright orange and pink are gone, and have been replace by some gray and red tones! That's right, the layout I've been promising you guys is finally up! Be sure to tell us what you think about it in our brand new Tagboard. You might also want to check the "biography" section, because I modified it a little bit.
Now, the gallery update. Thanks to Danielle and Ashley I've added some on set pictures from various projects Joey has been a part of over the years. Warning: Cuteness overload, your heart might no be able to handle it...
TeenSpot posted a two part interview they did with Joey! In it she talks about her upcoming movies, "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Oz: The Great And Powerful" (we finally learn more about her characters! Did you know she actually has two roles in the movie?), and about other various topics.
Joey King’s major breakthrough arrived in 2010 with the leading role in Ramona & Beezus alongside teen star Selena Gomez. Her absolutely adorable portrayal of “Ramona” in the film adaptation of the book series by Beverly Clearly quickly caught the attention of industry heavyweights like Christopher Nolan and Sam Raimi. In fact, both of which have casted King in upcoming Hollywood blockbusters!
TeenSpot.com recently caught up Joey to discuss many of her future projects, including her role in the upcoming 3D epic — Oz: The Great and Powerful! Check it out…
Joey, what inspired you to get into acting at such a young age?
I love acting, I’ve liked it ever since I was 3 ½ years old. I took a theater program when I was younger. (Then) I really started getting into acting — I was in commercial, guest starring in TV shows, I did my first small film called Grace. Also, my sisters were acting and I wanted to be like them.
What role has your family played in your career?
My family has been so supportive of me along the way. Without my mom I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. She helps me travel and is always with me – she makes things easier. My sisters support me too. Without my dad I wouldn’t have food on my plate or go anywhere else as well. He works a steady job. I’m so proud of my family.
What can you tell me about Oz: The Great and Powerful?
The project is so much fun. It’s a prequel to ‘The Wizard of Oz’. I’m working with an amazing cast, an amazing director. It’s so awesome, it’s just like the first (movie), but this one explains how it all happened, how Oz became Oz, how it led to Dorothy coming. I’m working with James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff and Rachel Weisz. I’m just having the best time!
You play the role of China Girl?
I play Wheelchair Girl and China Girl. Wheelchair Girl is in Kansas and China Girl is my main character, she’s in most of the movie. She’s really fun – she’s sassy. She lost her family when the Wicked Witches came in. Now, Oz sort of becomes her adopted father.
Since Joey is a part of the "Bent" cast, she had to attend NBC's Winter TCA Tour to promote the show. She looked great in a white dress and red jacket (although, she looks a little bored in some of the pictures). I've added some pictures, which you can find in our gallery. Also, here are two quotes from the event, that I thought you'd like to read:
1."I don't have a relationship on the show. Which is fine because I'm 10 years old." — Joey King, who plays Peet's daughter, commenting on the show's focus on relationships.
2."Joey's a scene-stealer. And she's to be removed from this cast." — Jeffrey Tambor, joking about young cast mate Joey King.
Also, I'm sure many of you are wondering what happened to our Tagboard and when it will be back. Well, the thing is, ShoutMix is no longer offering free Tagboars. That's why the Tagboard stopped working. Brooke and I are trying to find a replacement, but we haven't been too successful. Let's hope we can find one soon so that you guys can keep chatting!
A new trailer of the movie "The Dark Knight Rises" was released a few days ago, and even though Joey is not in it, I wanted to share it with you. It looks like it's going to be an epic movie. I'm so glad Joey is a part of this film!
Joey King attended the season 23 Survivor finale Sunday, December 18, 2011. Jeff Probst selected her to ask Ozzy one of the most common questions everyone wanted to know.
